P5 Unit 8 Long Haul Travel Destinations

P5 Plan a multi centre long haul tour to meet a given UK visitor profile, showing sources used

A country or tourist area should be chosen for P5 and I would suggest that you pick South East Asia as there is so much to see and do.

You have been given a very fun brief in the assignment.  Your multi centre tour needs to contain at least four centres.  A centre is a main stop within the itinerary.

The tour should be presented as an itinerary and should include transport arrangements to and from the UK and between the four centres.

It should also include details of accommodation used en route and at each centre any car hire, excursions or trips that are pre-booked as well as any attractions that you include and any events that are available to the visitors at that time of year at each centre.

This tour needs to be unique and constructed personally by you.

It should not be copied in part from any existing tour or available today in a brochure or online.

Evidence of research

This challenge expects you to provide a list of evidence (sources) of your research which should be included with this work as a separate bibliography to support this achievement . The bibliography should be referenced in the learners work.  Any research used must be edited into your own words

The Customer Brief

This can be found in the assignment and includes the visitor profile, budget, motivation for the trip, visitor type and restrictions.  Although we don't need a detailed costing you will need to consider the cost when choosing the accommodation or transport and when creating.

M3 Independently plan a detailed multi centre tour, clearly justifying selections for the specified visitor profile

To achieve M3 you need to justify the choices that you have made for all aspects of the planned tour and referring back to the visitor profile.  This could be done verbally or in written format but verbally would require a recording and a witness statement

.Plan of action

  1. Go East! to somewhere that 21-28 days will be interesting and exciting
  2. Sort flights first - can you get to these places?
  3. Then add hotels to meet needs of the couple
  4. Now add activities, time out, sightseeing, day trips, rest days
  5. Ensure the itinerary is in day by day order
  6. Job done!

P4 Unit 8 Long Haul Travel Destinations

Describe features and facilities that contribute to the appeal of a selected long haul destination for the different types of visitors from the UK

For P4 a specific destination must be chosen.  I order to link the appeal to different visitor types you need to include a breadth iof information and a destination such as Sydney would work better than the Maldives for this challenge as it would appeal to a wider range of visitors.

All features contributing to the appeal of the chosen destination must be identified and described in detail to achieve P4

Accessibility must include as a minimum , methods of transport, their frequency and examples of cost and facilities together with a full description of attractions (natural, built, events, shopping, cultural), destination facilities (local transport, accommodation range and cost, other e.g. sport, entertainment , food and drink), positive and negative features of the climate that contribute to its appeal for different types of visitors, including leisure, business and other types of visitors identified in teh assignment brief.

M2 Assess the significance of different features and facilities o the appeal of a selected long haul destination for different types of visitors from the UK

For M2 the different features and facilities of the chosen destination must be clearly idntified. The significance of these to its popularity and appeal should be reviewed.  This may involve researching visitor numbers to support your assessment.  commenting on how these visitors numbers to a specific destination have increased since significant new attractions, investment  or major events were introduced.

D2 Evaluate how the selected destination has capitalised on its features and developed its facilities to attract different types of visitor s from the UK

For D2 these features and facilities must be clearly evaluated to show how the destination has capitalised on its features, such as climate, natural attractions and developed its facilities to attract different types of visitors.  This is where selecting a suitable destination comes into play as destinations like Dubai and Las Vegas that have had massive planned development will provide greater scope for evaluation

P2 Unit 8 - Outline different types of holidays available in long haul destinations that meet specific UK visitor motivations

Dear Year 13

This task requires you to OUTLINE five different types of holiday destinations from five continents that meet very different UK visitor motivations.

Looking at holiday brochures or tour operators online you should provide brief evidence of what the holiday is, who the operator is, whats included, the length of the stay and your departure and arrival locations.

e.g. if you looked at a a Walt Disney World Resort that would be classed as a purpose built destination in North America and typical holidays might be short break - long weekend, single centre, accommodation included or twin centre including a trip down to the Florida Keys or cruise out of Miami.

Typical motivations for this could include attractions / entertainment.

You need to ensure that you cover each type of holiday and each motivator within the five holiday destinations that you decide to choose but you don't need a separate destination for each one in the list as long as everything in the assignment has been covered at least once in this submission.

Deadline for P1 & P2 is Wednesday 20th March 2019

Other examples could include:

Historic attractions
Asia - Great Wall of China
Touring holiday

P4 Unit 2 - the Business Plan for Your Travel Industry Enterprise

P4 – M2 – D2

To achieve P4, learners are required to produce a business case for a travel and tourism business enterprise within financial constraints. The enterprise should take account of the competition and be planned to gain a competitive advantage  and be either a:

  • small business venture, eg a visitor attraction,
  • escorted walking holidays or
  • guest house - see Trip advisor best B&B in UK 2015 here

The financial constraints are set as part of the assignment and resources are on the system!

Learners are not expected to run the project; they are expected to put together a business case to gain approval to run the project or small business venture and to present the business case to an accountant or financial advisor in order to judge its feasibility.

Learners must set their objectives and undertake thorough research for all aspects of the enterprise.

Full business case details, use template here must included the following:

  1. Aims and objectives of your business enterprise see here
  2. Start up capital required and sources of finance
  3. Cash flow forecast see here
  4. The ability to identify a target market from typical market segments
  5. Details of intended marketing materials to generate awareness of this new venture see here
  6. Competitive analysis, USP and competitive advantage strategy see here
  7. Clear time-scales for the setting up and operation of the enterprise.
Learners must produce a business case that is feasible, ie researched and realistic and achieve set objectives, eg make a profit within given time-scales, raise income and cover costs, meet a recognised demand, target appropriate markets, take account of competition, gain competitive advantage.

The business case could be presented verbally with supporting evidence or in a written format. If presented verbally, it could be to a panel of business start-up experts, the panel being made up of external experts and tutors. Learners can achieve P4 even if the business case has room for improvement as long as the evidence includes objectives, timescales, financial and marketing details, a list of actions required, is within the specified financial constraints, has a cash flow forecast and is feasible.

To achieve M2, learners should explain the feasibility of the business case and justify how it will meet the objectives. Assessors can question learners to establish feasibility and check understanding in relation to timescales, financial feasibility and actions required in order to meet objectives. To achieve M2, the business case should be sound and the learners reasonably confident in their approach and their responses.

To achieve D2, learners should present a professional business case responding confidently to questions and justifying its feasibility. It is expected that the business case will have been thoroughly researched, presented in a professional format (written) or within a professional presentation (oral) and with supporting materials to clarify and expand on the details within the business case. Learners will respond confidently and knowledgeably to questions and be able to justify why their business case is feasible in terms of it being well researched, realistic and that it will
meet its objectives

Unit 2 P3 Assignment Brief - help yourself pack!

TASK 2 – P3 Review the methods and opportunities used by travel and tourism organisations to gain a competitive advantage and achieve business aims

Deadline Date: Wednesday 3rd June 2015

Using the same organisations in the previous task. Create a fact sheet or display which reviews the methods and opportunities used by both organisations to gain competitive advantage and achieve business aims providing examples. Your examples must cover all types of aims including:

Financial aims:
  • To survive - this objective would only apply to a start up business entering the market
  • To brake even - again this objective would apply to a small start up business
  • To increase sales revenue year on year by 15-20%
  • To make a profit to grow the company, pay shareholders a dividend, pay staff a bonus or retain profits for future initiatives.
  • To grow the companies market share
  • To be the customers first choice of airline carrier in the world
Other aims may focus on the companies Image and reputation
  • To aim to be environmentally friendly and reduce its carbon footprint as M&S did
  • To adopt a policy to only get involved with responsible tourism
  • To make a commitment to creating quality products or services to satisfy a current demand in the market
P3 Checklist / action plan
  1. You should start by identifying your chosen companies aims and objectives.
  2. You then need to discus why these aims and objectives are relevant to your chosenb business.
  3. Your chosen business examples must be sufficiently detailed to demonstrate that you understand how the method or opportunity to gain a competitive edge has achieved the business aims. (P3) Examples of what companies do to create a competitive advantage include:
  • Providing added value - what does this mean?
  • Providing new or innovative products or services - what will replace the Airbus
  • Embedding Total Quality Management into the day to day business activities click here can you think of any examples of this?
  • Providing exceptional customer service and training and developing all staff - how does your chosen companies do this?
  • Targeted advertising and promotions - BA carried out a joint promotion with Sainsbury's many years ago.  What are they doing currently?
  • Innovative pricing policies - price is a massive part of the marketing mix to generate sales however not everyone can travel when they want to and and price is often charged at a premium for exclusivity and prime time.  How does your chosen company price its products and services to gain a competitive edge?
  • Taking advantage of locational benefits - does your company have exclusive access to certain airports and destinations and hotels that no other company does?
  • Using modern sales techniques through integration and or through consortium membership - look at this sexy organisation here or this one here . This is very good method of creating an exclusive membership of suppliers who have maintained a minimum benchmark of service and quality and aim to target customers who appreciate such quality.
M1 Additional work
Your fact sheet or display should also compare the organisational and financial characteristics of the two organisations chosen and the methods and opportunities they have used to gain competitive advantage. All the items covered in previous tasks should be included when carrying out your comparisons. (M1)

D1 additional work
In your fact sheet or display you should also evaluate the links between an organisation’s characteristics and its success in gaining competitive advantage and achieving its aims (D1)

  • Government departments DCMS  fund and co-ordinate government controlled activiites
  • Government controlled - Visit Britain and the Department for transport
  • Local government controlled - Belfast City Council, Birmingham City Council City of London these organisations are based on visitor numbers and quality rather than financial success and revenue that they generate

P4 Unit 7 European Destinations P4 Factors that have contributed to one develoiping and one decling dsestination in Europe

P4 Approach - you need to REVIEW factors that have contributed to one declining and one developing destination in the European Travel market.
  1. Choose TWO holiday destinations - 1 declining - 1 developing

Identify factors that have contributed to the decline / growth e.g. POLITICAL FACTORS - EU membership, Eurozone initiatives, taxes, exchange rates and direct government intervention, ECONOMIC FACTORS - growth in disposable income, second homes and  growth of leisure travel (short break and activity travel),recession CULTURAL FACTORS, DESIGN - new products and services, low cost airlines, SECURITY, Competition, changes in fashion. and link it all back to the BUTLERS LIFE Cycle
  2. Research current information that will support part 2 above using the reading list below and researching other articles. and the fastest growing destinations in Europe article here
  3. Plan your PODCAST structure APPLYING it to the Butlers Life Cycle model
  4. Record and review your podcast presentation
Reading list to research P4
  • Declining demand from holidays in Europe review
  • What do you thinks going on in Venice
  • A location that has benefited a lt over 40 years from World Heritage status and one that you could say will drive it soon into decline e.g. Dubrovnik and here
  • European Statistics click here
  • Managing tourist destinations - Google books click here
  • Sustainable development in tourism.  How to manage the risks click here
  • From development to decline - click here
  • Travel trends from the office of National Statistics click here
  • We are all going bust beside the seaside article in this is money - Will more EU holiday destinations decline as UK holiday makers choose to holiday in the UK following the terrorist attack in Egypt last week - an alternative view click here

For M3 - You need to ANALYSE reasons for the developing and declining of your TWO selected destination in the European Travel Market.  You could talk about how the sophisticated traveller has become confident at unpack aging the packaged holiday and putting it together themselves or how social media and the non professional experience is attracting more customers e.g. Mollie Bylett and her Where's Mollie blog page My Cornwall Trip Part 1

For D2 you need to JUSTIFY how current factors could impact on the European travel market in the near future.  A typical distinction response might refer to the impact of the credit crunch with less disposable income being available for consumers and investors or the poor exchange rate with the pond and the Euro which could encourage more travel outside of the EU and maybe the appeal of these countries is greater to visitors from the rest od the world.  Looking ahead you may consider the impact of leaving the EU on the two destinations chosen.  You may even consider how the rise ion budget airlines has seen destinations grow but what would happen in the future if these low cost airline routes were withdrawn. Whatever angle you take make sure that you have some evidence fromyour research to back it up.

Unit 7 - European Destinations P3 M2 D1

Hi Year 13

For P3 we need to look at the FACTORS and FEATURES that determine the APPEAL of TWO leisure destinations in Europe for the different visitor types. Not countries TWO resorts.

P3 Select two destinations need to be from two different types of resorts e.g. beach, winter sports, countryside or cities.

You need to explain what type of visitor would be attracted to this resort and use the list of features and factors below to demonstrate how the destination will appeal to that visitor type.  The types of visitors you need to consider for each of the two resorts include:
  1. Solo travellers
  2. Couples - be they teenagers, young professionals, empty nesters or retired
  3. Families with young children and or teenage children
  4. Groups by age, event, shared interest.

M2 Demonstrate how the factors and features below would appeal to TWO of the selected types of visitors from the list above:
  • Climate - how many hours of sunshine, mm of rainfall, snow does this location get and are the  seasons very different and how? You should also comment of the temperature all year around if that relevant i.e. don't go there in monsoon season or no snow for skinning in the spring
  • Natural and built attractions - include any beaches, mountains, forests, lakes, conservation areas as well as any leisure parks, museums, art galleries, historic buildings, nightlife and any shopping malls
  • Cultural should include any signature food and drink specialities, different religious behavioural considerations for visitors and any cultural events that occur annually
  • Accessibility should focus on transport options form the UK market by air, sea, rail and road. indicated how long the journey and transfer time would take.
  • Economic should discuss any low cost travel options, the impact of exchange rates, the cost of staying in the destination and the perceived value for money
D1 To secure the distinction you need to focus on ONE of the chosen destinations and give detailed and realistic RECCOMMENDATIONS of how this destination could increase its APPEAL for DIFFERENT types of visitors from the UK

A wee PowerPoint is here if you still need some more self help!

Good luck and remember you are all aiming for a DISTINCTION this year

P2 Unit 7 European Destinations

To complete this P2/M1 challenge you will need to identify EIGHT holidays types from the different locations in the different countries that you have identified on one of your maps in P1.

To do this well you should consider ALL of the following locations when meeting the different MOTIVATIONS of the four customer types:
  • city locations such as Milan, Paris and Athens
  • coastal locations such as Ile du Ray, Benidorm, Magaluf
  • purpose built holiday locations such as LEGOLAND, Disneyland Paris
  • natural locations such as the Alps
  • historical and cultural locations such as Venice, Rome, Berlin, Paris, Athens

You should also consider and talk about  the different types of holidays that meet the needs of these PEN PORTRAITS:
  • Short break holidays are no longer than 3-4 days
  • Single centre holidays are one destination holidays..  Which pen portrait does this satisfy?
  • Twin or multi centre holidays are very different and require your customers to pack up and transfer location.
  • Cruise holidays vary from 3 days to 84 days.  Is there an opportunity to use this type of holiday for one of your pen portraits?
  • Holidays that require you to tour around an area may meet the needs of those active customers or those wanting to visit many cultural or historical locations.  They could be coach holidays or campa van road trips but make sure that these are recommended for the correct motivation.
So you need to identify TWO holidays from DIFFERENT countries for each of the FOUR customers pen portrait and then recommend your preferred holiday and explain why you think it is the best fit out of the two.  This provides evident for M1.

We have several lessons before then to hit this deadline so shout if you need anything

P2 Select holidays in European destinations to meet specific motivations

Dear Year 13

The assignment for P1 & P2 of unit 7 European Destinations can be found here.

A powerpoint to help you identify the different types of holidays and visitor motivations can be found here

A powerpoint of guidelines can be found here

In summary once you have completed all the maps for P1 for P2/M1 you need to firstly familiarise yourself with the four scenarios.

Each scenario requires you to choose two European holiday destinations for each pen portrait customer type - so you need to source and discuss eight holiday resorts in total.

For each holiday you must provide brief details of the holiday and the destination that you have selected and say WHY / HOW it meets the motivation of each customers pen portrait to achieve M1

The specification for Unit 7 is here

The formal deadline for P1, P2 M1 is 3pm on Wednesday 12th September and a box will be set up in the library. Use next week wisely as we only have five half terms next year and need to be done by Easter which as you know will come around very quickly.

Enjoy, have a great summer and thanks for working hard this year.  Having just totted up your scores I think you will agree that they were most impressive.

Best wishes.

Mr T
